Ian Fang was born in Shanghai and moved to Singapore in 2001. In a 2000 interview he explained that his mother, after consulting a Feng Shui master, gave him the name Fang Weijie (Chinese: 方威捷).
Once he settled in Singapore the following year, he began using a simplified Chinese version of that name—Fang Weijie (simplified: 方伟杰, traditional: 方偉傑). Although the English spelling stayed the same, the characters—and therefore the pronunciation—were completely different.
He made his acting debut under the simplified name in a police drama in 2011 and was named Best Newcomer at the Star Awards in 2013. Between 2014 and 2017 he received several nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the same ceremony.
In 2019, leaked explicit text messages between Fang and actress Carrie Wong sparked rumors of an affair.
Then, in 2022, he announced that his true name was indeed Fang Weijie (方威捷) and that he would start using it professionally. The next April he left Mediacorp and has since been working as an acting teacher at a children’s modelling school.
In 2025, Fang was convicted after pleading guilty to sexual offences with a minor.
From the timeline above, it seems like the real name given by the Feng Shui master did not bring Fang any positive effects but instead brought troubles. On the other hand, his artist’s name was the one that gave him excellent career progression as actor.

However, this name also carries the 劫财 and 伤官, which are not ideal to have in a name. For a male, having 劫财 will bring illicit relationships and unhappy marriages. It will make him a spendthrift and prone to a life of debauchery. The 伤官 will increase his impulsiveness and attract backstabbers, making his luck more unstable, full of extreme ups and downs.
He had reverted to using this inauspicious name since 2022 and all these negative indicators were shown during his trouble with the law due to his misadventure with an underage girl in 2025.
Between 2001 and 2017, when he was using his artist name 方伟杰, which most of us known him by, he was doing fairly well for over 16 years in his acting career.
The 杰 in this name gave him the Wood element which his Bazi needs. This name will boost his Noblemen Luck (贵人运), so even though he still likes to party and drink, there will always be seniors or mentors there to advise and guide him to the right path.
